The ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) curriculum is designed to equip aspiring accountants and finance professionals with the knowledge, skills, and expertise needed to excel in their careers. Structured into several levels, the ACCA Dubai covers a broad range of topics, from foundational principles to advanced concepts.

Applied knowledge:

This entry-level category consists of three papers – Accountant in Business (AB), Management Accounting (MA), and Financial Accounting (FA). Collectively, they lay the foundation for understanding fundamental accounting principles, governance, ethics, and financial reporting norms. Focus on building a strong grasp of basic concepts, terminology, and mathematical procedures integral to subsequent modules.

Applied skills:

Progressing to the next tier, nine compulsory exams await – Corporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), Financial Management (FM), Sustainable Business (SB), Governance, Risk, and Ethics (GRE), and Business Analysis (BA). Each paper probes deeper into specialized areas, fine-tuning technical know-how essential for practicing accountancy. Divided into two sittings, December and June, allocate adequate time to systematically absorb wide-ranging content.

Strategic professional:

Concluding the curriculum, this highest echelon houses two mandatory exams – Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR). Both assessments scrutinize integrated application of accumulated knowledge, mandating synthesis of multi-disciplinary facets. Anticipate lengthier case studies demanding strategic thinking, judgment calls, and decisive actions. Supplement core competencies with optional subjects handpicked from four clusters – Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Corporate Finance (CF), Public Sector Affairs and Social Responsibilities (PSASR), and Performance Management (PM). Selecting electives tailored to vocational aspirations sharpens proficiency, burnishing CVs and impressing interview panels.

Essentials and options:

Strategic Professional level introduces another layer of complexity, segregating compulsory units into ‘Essentials’ and ‘Options’. Essentials represent generic cornerstones applicable across industries, while Options encapsulate niche expertise germane to specific sectors. Strike a delicate equilibrium, striking neither too narrow nor excessively broad a focus. Delve sufficiently into ancillary fields to exhibit well-rounded erudition yet avoid getting sidetracked from central objectives.

Practical experience requirement (PER):

Beyond textbook mastery, PER mandates gaining relevant work experience spanning 36 months. Supervised by approved counsellors, this prerequisite bridges academia and reality, molding raw intellectuals into accomplished professionals. Document achievements meticulously, mapping accomplishments back to ACCA pillars, and submit periodic reports documenting progress.
